About Black In Oakland.com

Black in Oakland.com is dedicated to getting the Black back into Oakland by supporting the small businesses in Oakland and by supporting the Healthy Economics Model for Self Development presented by The Familyhood Connection.

What is Healthy Economics?

A systematic approach of bridging volunteers into a communities generation gap to emphasize and promote a sustainable, local, economy.

The two main systems of Healthy Economics are : 1) The Food System 2) The Educational system.

The strategy to build Healthy Economics is to utilize these four main programs (websites). 1stSaturdays.com, MoBetterfood.com, Friendsofschool.org, Intergenerationalenterprise.com to strengthen both the Food and Educational Systems.

Our model stems from building "the complete school" and having this complete school participate in the improvement within and outside the schools gates. The complete school consists of a functioning student government, alumni association and Parent Teacher Association that work together to create social enterprises that involve all the generations above.

The Mo' Better Food Program (MBF) is one of the first Social Enterprises recommended by the Healthy Economics Model. The Mo' Better Food Program utilizes school gardens and farmers market to increase the capacity for a community to build cooperative grocery stores that enable students from the local high school, work experience and internships, while enabling alumni/PTA, jobs and ownership.

The 1st Saturdays Program is a monthly volunteer reminder for the community to revisit the progress it has made in building its social enteprises. While many volunteer activities and programs bring volunteers together to start gardens and/ or clean up the community i.e. MLK day, 10/10/10, 1stsaturdays through its monthly volunteer days, seeks to be the maintenance of these projects.

The Intergenerational Enterprise is the name of the above generations of the complete school coming together to start and operate the social enterprises mentioned above.
